“I feel old”, something I often say to people but I don’t mean it as a negative indication.

The idea of aging is different in every culture, society and ideology. Having Asian parents, specifically Thai, the concept of aging is much unsought of. People look for ways to keep young, be young and look young but I believe there are two big perspectives on this.

I love feeling old but to me old means that I am wiser and more in touch with my surroundings and environment. This is probably because I grew up faster than I would have in different circumstances. I was push to adapt and grow and therefore, feeling older and mature than others became a good thing for me, or at least that was what I told myself and it worked. I am grateful for that growth cause I would not end up where I am today if it wasn’t for those situations that shaped me.

Society is however telling me otherwise. “Why are you not dating?” “When are you getting married?” “What is in the future?” They all push you to grow up and become independent but as soon as you have a job and are living the life that you wanted the question changes. “Why are you working so hard?” “Enjoy life and keep young.” “You’re looking old, use some facial cream!” I mean, seriously?!

Older people have better lives. Many found their true passion and their calling much later in life, which is why getting older every year is such an amazing and thrilling thing. There’s so much to learn and people should live in the moment. If you’re twenty, be twenty and do the foolish things you can get away with. So that when you’re forty-something you are done with dancing on a table in the club, or not, no judgment. Nothing is sadder missing out on your amazing 20s, 30s, 40s, whatever ss. It is never too late but the point is to allow yourself to experience the good and bad when you are still trying to figure yourself out.

Aging is not in the age but in your mind. Some younger crowds are wiser than older people because they put themselves out there more and therefore have a certain mentality that is more open and understanding. Some, I say! I hope this makes some sort of sense because you can keep young and do stupid shit and be wiser at the same time. Youth shouldn’t only be wasted in the young!
