Runaway Bride (Paramount Picture)

When you have a discussion on the topic of love, one would come up with the word association of ‘marriage’. Now, I have my own take on that which is quite different from everyone else in my family such as mom, grandma, aunts etc. (the generation-X). But I will just go ahead and say it. I do not believe in the ‘commercialize form of marriage’.

Do not freak out. Let me explain.
My idea of marriage, and let me repeat, “my idea” of marriage is that commitment has its own pace and ties. It does not make much sense about the agreement in signing your promise to have and to hold, til’ death do us part on a piece of paper. This has a lot to do with the existence of ‘divorce’. What is the point of getting married if you think ‘oh, if it doesn’t work, I’ll just get a divorce’ which is even more complicated than normal breaking ups. I do understand that some violent relationships must be helped and ended, however, I do not agree with having to be stuck with someone and using the excuse of marriage to make it work. You should make it work in any form of relationship.

This topic came up as my mother and grandmother kept nagging on about whom I was dating and plans for the future. “Your eggs have expiry date, you know.” Ughhhhh, do not get me started. I am single and it is not that I am not looking but have you seen what’s out there? It is a female battlefield. But nevertheless you can only know true love when you’ve spent some time loving yourself.

As cliché as it may sound, it is the best thing you can do for yourself. Feeling nervous, jealous, always trying to fix someone is definitely a bad habit that we stumble upon. It is a natural instinct but it is never a good feeling and, in fact, consistent feelings like jealousy and agitation (to put in good words) could be like a disease. Let’s take break ups as an example. Break ups are never easy. Whether it was your choice, your partner’s choice or mutual; it is what I would like to call separation anxiety. What we tend to feel once we lose someone that has been a part of the routine and comfort, it can become problematic, unconsciously or not. Well, the symptoms (if I still have to mention) are feeling lonely, feeling let down or even feeling bad about yourself or whatever depending on the situation. There are endless different kinds of symptom.

So marriage is not something I would jump on, just yet. If anything, I would prefer an easy legal-binding ceremony and spend on a long-ass honeymoon! Anyways, whatever floats your boat. But my marriage boat aint gonna float, just yet.
